What caught my attention in chapter 1 was the brief story of a 13-year old girl visiting her doctor. After visiting the doctor for 8 years he asked her if she was practicing safe sex. Upon hearing this, the girl began to laugh. I think that the doctor should have approached the guardian of the girl to make sure weather she is ready for that conversation. The guardian could have spoken to the girl to where she would take the conversation in a more serious manner next time.

The guardian would not necessarily know if the child is sexually active. Even if the guardian were to attempt a serious converation with the girl, would she be honest as to whether or not she is having sex?

If the girl had an open relationship with her guardian (her grandmother in this case), I feel she would have been more apt to be open with her than with a male doctor. Depending on the type of experiences she has had with boys at this point she may not feel that the necessary level of trust is present there when it comes to a male doctor. But on the other hand, being that her guardian is her grandmother, the 13 year old girl may not feel her grandmother can understand or relate to the things she is experiencing.

I honestly don't think it matters. When I was growing up I was very close to my mom, but I was still very private about certain matters. Doctors always ask questions like that, it's their job. I have been asked if I practiced safe sex since I was 10. I would be more apt in telling the doctor the truth than my mom simply because the doctors have differen't agendas then your parents.

I think Kristin is right here. For us girls, think about the first time you went to the OBGYN and what age you were then. You get sucked into the voice of the book and the way the information is presented by the author. I,too, would feel more comfortable talking to a doctor about these matters. Furthermore, I would be mortified if he shared this confidential information with anyone without my consent.
