On p.95 there is a letter that was written by a magazine as a guideline to writing love letters. I just wanted to know is this really what women want to hear because I think it goes a bit overboard....talking about how I would die without you....yea just seems a little over the top to me.

NO, that is not what i want to hear. If a guy ever wrote me a letter like that...it would probably be the last time we would talk. I'm not really into all that "cheesy" stuff that guys say because thats what they think we want to hear. That letter comes off to me as very needy and sort of obsessive. I mean I know that I am not like alot of girls, but please...thats sufficating!

I really disagree with the whole thing as well. I do not think that accurately portrays women at all. I do believe that some women, as well as men, can be quite obsessive, but not to that extreme.

Telling a guy what to say to you makes it feel insincere. Even if he does love you, those are not his words. It is simply you telling him what you want to hear. If a woman is so insecure that she has to tell her boyfriend or husband to say specific things to make her feel loved, maybe she should work on her self-esteem instead of looking to others to prove her worth.
I think Jonathan is right that these magazines such as Cosmo kind of point women in this direction to write letters like these. Cosmo and others like it being published in great numbers also adds gas to the fire. Shalit also didn't have to be sarcastic about the whole thing either. I'm sure some people feel that strongly about their mate but word it in this manner because that is how these magazines say it should be said.

Putting the words right into my boyfriends mouth for him has also turned me on...not so much. Sure if he really felt that he might die without me then ok I would love to hear it if he meant it. What woman feels so insecure that she has to be constantly reminded of how much she is loved? Truthfully if I were the boyfriend I would get real sick of that and it would actually make me rethink my current love situation. This makes women look extremely weak, naive, and incredibly too dependent on their boyfriends. However, don't get me wrong, women do love to hear nice things, but only if they are sincere.
