Chapter 12

On page 231 Shalit quotes a story from the New York Times, then says its hard to prosecute boys who are assaulting girls in school when the teachers are doing the same thing more or less. I agree with Shalit here. I'm sure if something like this is going on then these kids, the girls and the boys, are old enough to say something to their parents at least. They should also be able to do such a thing as anonymously as possible.

As an education major, this story shocked me. I would never think to do such a thing in my classroom and find it hard to fathom that others in this profession find it satisfactory. It is necessary to be a role model in the classroom. Leading by example while every move is being scrutinized by 15-year-olds will most certainly reinforce proper behavior. It is indeed hard to punish impressionable kids who are exposed to bad role models whether they are teachers or athletes. For another example, it is negatively ineffective to punish your dog for peeing in the house when you were the one who neglected taking him outside. Who is really at fault?
